 Our Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) provides very specialist services for the most vulnerable pre-term and term newborn infrants who need complex, intensive medical care.
Our unit has highly skilled staff with state of art equipment and the expertise necessary to deliver the care needed for babies in the unit.
We also have parental accommodation as well as facilities for parents to stay with their babies before going home. We specialize in caring for babies from across the region with a range of conditions which includes:
- Extreme Prematurity
- Complex Respiratory Disease
- Complex Renal and Cardiac problems
- Serious Gut Disorders
Complex Genetic and Metabolic problems
Admission :
24 Hour admission to the neonatal medical intensive care, high dependency and specialized care.

Birthweight less than 1800 gm
- Gestation less than 32 weeks
- Babies with severe respiratory distress or receiving assisted ventilation
- Babies with significant birth asphyxia (requiring IPPV by 10 minutes, APGAR <5 at 10 minutes)
- Significant rhesus haemolytic disease of newborn (Cord blood Bilirubin >5 mg/dl). Jaundice on day 1 and rapidly raising SBR > 5 mg/24 hour.
- Babies with significant requirements for circulatory support eg. Ionotropes, infusion or postoglandins
- Babies who require major emergency surgery

- Low Birth weight: Under 2400 gm with other clinical concerns
- Prematurity: Babies born between 32 and 36 weeks gestation , Level I criteria will be applied.
- Infection: Suspicion of infection together with clinical concern
- Respiratory problems:
- Apnoea or Cyanotic episodes
- Any respiratory distress causing concern
- Gastrointestinal problems:
- Feeding problems severe enough to cause clinical concern
- Bile stained vomiting, or other signs suggesting bowel obstruction
- Requiring Total Parental nutrition
- Metabolic problems: Inability to maintain a serum glucose greater than or equal to 45 mg/dl despite adequate feeding
- CNS problems: Convulsions
- Malformations: Congenital anomalies that may require intervention
- Cardiovascular Disease: Heart murmurs who needs initial assessment, Central cyanosis
